Campaign of Evil

Session 35

Landrew POV

After securing the next generation with the children we stole in Hautvalt, we are left at a juncture.  Clearly, the Lady Wild has revealed herself to be Eremnon.  We have become quite familiar with Eremnon over our adventures together.  The goddess of the 'not yet farmland' has crossed and insulted those we have have come to know as our allies in the pantheon; playing the civilized against the primal.  We have resolved to address her manipulative perversions of the natural order, however it has been agreed that this must be done while we are in a peak state of readiness.

Raj, Drax and I have discussed amongst ourselves the best course action, and stand ready to meet Eremnon with the assistance of our comrades.  Sadly, Ragnar has gone on one of his frequent vision quests and left us without his Spirit.  My comrades and I spend a great while dithering over our various options.  Clearly our desires lack the vision on what should come next.  Hopefully Ragnar shall return with those answers.

We ultimately decide that additional assets will be needed to take on Ermnon.  Several options are discussed, but we find ourselves slaves to the drudgery of long distance travel.  It is decided that we should attempt to explore the shortcut available to us through the Bog.  I bring us back to the bog for a quick reprovisioning stop.  Unfortunately, we are forced to settle for bad tea from the old man and mediocre coffee from our zombie barista.  We really need to level that barista up and get a new baker for the pancake shop.  It's a simple matter at this point to shuttle personnel back and forth from Hautvelt to Little Walop.  During this time period we are able to drain the town dry of every last coin, cup, wine b
arrel, tool, and piece of straw, all in the name of Landrew of course.  Further, we are able to construct 40 additional healing potions with the Pariapt.

We set off back thru the bog in the direction we last encountered the wolves in the forest.  As the bog has grown, this has become quite a slog.  I leave a note for my underlings to build boats.  At least 3 – built for traversing the bog.  The poles were to be intricately carved - we'll see how well they have studied their craft.

Eventually we make it thru the bog and into a place that feels more alien to me.  This feels like a good place to break camp with my fellow mortals:  Daryl and the other Daryl?  We prepare a fantastic feast with a pheasant that Raj has shot out of the sky with such precision, that it
practically lands directly in my pot ready to cook.  A few cranberries, logon berries, and other herbs i am able to summon from the lands aids in making a fantastic stew…. It also aids in causing a distraction for a bit of trickery i was able to accomplish – more on that later, diary.

Onward we press toward the mountains.  It becomes clear that we are not only followed, but pushed into the mountains by dire wolves.  We try to circumvent, but find ourselves trapped.  We decide to travel up the mountain, but eventually find ourselves find facing a beast, one described to me in my youth at the temple as a bumble?  My whatever the case, we lay it on easy, but ultimately find the pathetic snow beast joined by a sizable dire wolf pack.  I am able to easily dispatch not only this beast beast, but a great many of these filthy animals.  Unfortunately, their numbers prove a bit much and i and gravely wounded.

I am awakened some time later, feeling both less and more than myself.  The remaining wolves have been destroyed, the others have been tending to my wounds.  I encourage my comrades that we rest and recover before breaking camp.  I guess Raj will be needing me to watch her bow until she can find a new host.  I'll grab hers and find where I dropped mine as well.

Note to self, the douche that was supposed to be serving Drax but instead just stood around needs to be disciplined.

Session 32

Landrew POV

After sleeping threw the rest of the day, my comrades and I get moving and start heading back towards town.  As dawn approaches, we are on the outskirts of the city.  From this place, we hatch a plan.  We creep in on a farm and approach quietly.  Billy, I mean Guillaume – I think I'll call him Guilly - waits by the door as Raj enters and possess the body of one of those sleeping inside.  She then invites Guilly inside, neat trick.  Guilly makes a meal of an old woman there while the mother and her children continue to sleep.  I use this staff that i found to possess the woman and quietly walk over to the children.  I gently wake them and bid them be silent and listen.  A group of filthy dwarves has slain all the neighbors and will surely be coming for them next.  They must run into town as quickly as possible and get help while the adults stay behind to rally/warn other other nearby farms.  Off the children go towards town, brave little monsters they are going out at night alone.  Should they survive, I'll find a way to ensure they learn to show more fear to what lurks beyond the light.

Side note:  That staff seemed to be pushing on my consciousness, trying to take over.  It failed, obviously, but I shall have to show it respect.

For affect, I use my possessed mother to attack Ragnar.  He caves in the side of her skull with his hammer and leaves it behind for evidence.  Short work is then also made of the next home over.  A note is written, but I care little for letters and pay little attention.  We decide that we should head back to The Bog and let our little scheme play out while we rest.

Upon returning to The Bog, one of my minions informs us that the area has grown tremendously.  Another of my minions set out to explore and has not returned.  We set off in the direction he went and pick up his tracks.  As we progress further out, I feel my connection slipping away until it is finally gone.  This is another of those plane crossings we have experienced in a few other areas.  Unfortunately, this plane is home to some very very large wolves.  I didn't fair well with them and find myself waking to Guilly pouring a healing potion down my throat.

We will need to explore this new realm at some point in the future.

Landrew POV

Two of my comrades have fallen.  I didn’t know any rituals to raise the dead, so i made one up – that didn’t work either.  The others stood again after falling, but this time it’s different.  No more free passes I guess.  I spend some time carving out sharks out of the coconuts to guard them on their way into the afterlife while Drax fishes Billy out of the reef.  While taking care of Raj’s belongings, at whips image presents it self and states that the bow is hers, always hers.  Raj lives! – sorta?  Vecna, (praise him) works in mysterious ways.

I gather finish gathering together her and Billy’s belongings so that we can bring them with and then meditate for a while while Ragnar fiddles with his amulet.  After this brief rest, we decide to contact Mr. Polecat for a ‘safe’ ride outta this dump.  He is quite upset about something and agrees to drop us where we need to go if we can do him a quick favor.  Bringing us through some kind of portal, we find ourselves standing on a cobblestone sidewalk somewhere.  Mr. Polecat is present along with a pale figure who introduced himself as Guillaume.   Drax mentions something about Billy and papers but I don’t pay much attention to documents and such.

Mr. Polecat advised that he really needs us to retrieve an ordinary object from a this place across a fiery chasm… it is likely trapped.  Ok, no problem, we got this.  Walk in, fuck shit up, walk out – same as always.  As we enter the structure built into the side of a mountain, we walk up a stairwell to and find a dinner party of kind going on.  We introduce ourselves to the host and mingle with the guests for a little bit.  Louise seems to be disappointed that Polecat sent us instead of coming himself and proceeds to mock him.  She advises that we leave, for our own safety…great host.

Louise gives us a parting gift for Mr. Polecat, a small box.  That gave me an idea:  when I first picked up Raj’s painbow up i felt it try to take control of me for a moment.  I decide to gift her Raj’s bow, which Ghost Raj said I should not do under any circumstances.  We then leave the room but dally near the exit to see what happens.  The gamble pays off, Louis’ body walks out and gives me a little wink.  Some of us head back out to get council from Mr. Polecat, he scolds us for bringing him the wrong box, which turned out to be another insult, so we head back in.

The group decides that the thing we are looking for must be on the bottom floor somewhere.  The first room we enter is filled with goopy looking man sized figures in terrible agony.  A door gives way to a small hallway with a clearly boobytrapped room.  The room has a small acorn on a pillow.  It feels like this is what we are looking for, but we don’t have an immediate ideas for getting around the traps.

We explore two more rooms.  One of them has some paintings designed to humiliat Mr. Polecat and a closet full of various items which appear magical in nature.  Everyone helps themselves to a few things – except for Ragnar who helps himself to a lot of things.  I hope this stuff isn’t a a trick or he’s in real trouble.

The last room has some tormented souls on fire and a large statue – it looks thoroughly like something we shouldn’t mess with – so back to the acorn.  I try tossing a figure into the room.  The door slams shut and a gas is heard emanating as we expected.  Guillaume and Ragnar take turns futzing the the room and trap, but ultimate come out with the acorn.  Deciding to quit while we are ahead we return to Mr. Polecat who thanks us sends us on to our destination (after he kicks his sister, the body Raj was borrowing, into the fiery abyss).  Really feels like we dodged a bullet on that one.  I have a feeling that Raj saved our bacon by keeping Louis out of our business while we looted her place.

As we arrive back at Hauteveldt, this Guillaume character pretty much bursts into flame as soon as he is in daylight.  A few of my companions fool about trying steal remedies from each other, but i casually cast a darkness spell on him to his relief.  We spend a few minutes interrogating him and find out that he is/was Billy.  His trip to that Vampire castle left a bit of a mark on him, literally.  That is what allowed him to survive into his present form.  Well, mystery solved – we decide to camp here until nightfall and then head into the city.

Mental note:  am I the only one left alive here?  Must speak with Miska about that the next time we are back at the temple.

Eaten by Sharks

The party had discussions in The Bog and decided that while they thought the attack in Neuholm had probably been successful they wanted to be sure by arriving in Hauteveldt showing signs of their injuries and saying they had been attacked by the dwarfs.

It was agreed that it was necessary to get to Hauteveldt before the dwarfs to be convincing.  Overland travel was clearly impossible.  Hieronymous Polecat was considered as a possibility but the final decision was for Billy to take up the Amulet of the Planes and transport the party to the campsite in which a number of innocent merchants had been murdered, one day's travel from Neuholm.  In order to be as convincing as possible the party decided to do minimal healing on themselves to be able to display legitimate wounds.  In hindsight this may have been an error.

Billy made the attempt and the party found itself in a tropical sea two hundred yards from a tiny desert island, with a reef one hundred yards away.  And there were sharks.

Drax sank into the depths as he was wearing armor.  Landrew utilized her monkish movement skills and made it through the reef and to the safety of the island.  Billy was heading for the reef but Rajelai was slower and was attacked by sharks.  Billy heroically tried repeated attempts to save Rajelai, and Drax produced a cone of ice upon which Raj could get out of the water.

Billy and Raj were eaten by sharks.

While this was happening Landrew collected coconuts, and Drax attempted to help but mostly sank.  The remains of the bodies were retrieved by the remaining pair, and then thoroughly looted.  Billy's effects included some fake (or are they?) papers in the name of Guillaume de Jeune.  From Rajelai's Painbow rose an insubstantial figure, with a terrifying visage torn apart by wild beasts.  In a chilling whisper it said, "All die!  They must all die.  Die in agony, in pain!"

How will they escape from the island?  Will they continue with the plan?  Is Billy gone forever?  Who is this Guillaume de Jeune?  What's going on with the Painbow?

The party was given a mission to cause racial conflict between humans and dwarfs by having each side blame the other for an attack during a trade negotiation between Neuholm and Hauteveldt in The Endan.  The human trade delegation was slaughtered and their carriages stolen, and the party attempted to impersonate the delegation.  Access was granted, and rooms provided, but the party indiscriminately murdered every dwarf they could find as soon as possible.  The party was eventually driven off and transported back to The Bog.  The party healed up, and left The Bog for coffee and crumpets.

Question for the party, was the mission successful?

Experience Points 3,500 per player

The five weeks of traveling have resulted in the continuation of the processes of building the castle and village, the training of minions, and the expansion of The Bog, the perimeter of which is now unknown.

The next portion of the mission is to start religious conflict within The Endan, and then frame the Church of Belo for starting the whole thing.  Religion in The Endan is pluralistic in that shrines and temples for a range of gods and spirits appear in all villages and cities, and residents often worship multiple gods.  The Church of Belo appears in all cities.  Local gods and spirits come from the basics of rural life, The Hearth/Forge (fire), The Green Lady (agriculture), Lady Wild (the border of forest and field, mistress of the Wild Hunt), The Bear, The Boar, and diverse minor spirits based on local geographical features.

Question for the party?  What's the plan?

There is a final component, a mysterious group of individuals called The Makers who have apparently been in the area longer than humans or dwarfs.  They live individually, and very privately, in ancient stone buildings.  They are reputed to be powerful users of magic, supposedly saving local inhabitants from time to time according to their will.  They are legendary for their odd capriciousness.

Landrew POV

awe shit… It looks like we are trapped in the mountain.  A party of dwarves comes out from down a dark hall, they are easily dispatched.  Raj's painbow sings the song of it's people.  Next a some small machine like things skitter down the hall and start drilling into Drax's armor.  At the same time a basilisk is released, we struggle with it for a bit but ultimately I was able to run it through with my spear.  Drax finishes off last the mechanical bug things.  We move on to the next room and are soon met by another, larger party of dwarves along with a cannon.  We are able to slowly whittle down their forces but take some damage in the processes.  Drax is heavily wounded.  We decide to tend to his wounds and head back to the bog.  Only someone drops a fireball us just as we are heading out.  Most of the party goes down.  Ragnar is able to keep on his feat and use his planes amulet to get us back to the bog for rest and pancakes.  Young Billy is treated to some very nice crepes.  Hopefully that will help with his aim, he spent a lot of time whiffing in battle.

The Road to Neuholm

Landrew POV

Waking up in the midst the of the wool trading caravan, I figured I'd have nice breakfast and someone to drive us to Neuholm.  Now we have two hostages, blood on my boots and my eggs are burnt.  Perfect.   Well, first things first secure the hostages:  that cretin, Abraham, and the fat fucker I had to poison when he mouthed off.  It'll take until tonight before Abe wakes up after I spiked his pipe so we'll just need to keep an eye fatty.  We decide it's best to hit the road and make some progress toward our destination but after a few hours it's clear that the poison is acting more quickly than anticipated on our captive.  We hold up the caravan to do some foraging for the antidote but the bastard checks out early.  One hostage left.

We continue down the road and run into another caravan heading back.  We chat for bit and gather some intel.  A plan is formulated to use these guys in planting the story of our caravan being attacked by the dwarves.  At this point we realize that this isn't the caravan we were looking for.  We decide to send the wagons and Abe back at the bog and book it toward Neuholm on horseback.  My boys will keep an eye on Abe in case we need to use him later.  Blinking back, some of the party has gone ahead to catch up with the caravan.  Drax and I try as best we can to catch up but by the time we run into them, they've already caught up with and dispatched the trade caravan.  Ragnar is wearing a severed head on a crown, that boy aint right.  We clean up the wagon with some of the wool we left at the bog, stash the remains of bodies and dead horses at the bog, use stolen papers to assume their identities, and head on to the mountain.

Arriving at the gates, I present papers claiming we are trade representative.  The dragonborne stays in his carriage and feigns sleep.  The rest of uf are escorted to rooms where we are to wait until morning.  It's around then that I guess Drax got bored and started wandering about.  Predictably, they decide that just because he's a 7' tall dragonborne with glowing red eyes, he should be persecuted.  I was looking forward to a nice meal but instead these good-thumpers got us doing work again.  We come a running when the alarm bells start going off.  By the time we get there Drax has dispatched several.  I step on the wind to inject myself into the battle.  One dwarven soldier's armor is able to barely turn the blade of my spear but I'm able too spin it back around for another attack which rips out his throat.  Bringing the spear down I plant the spear in the ground, use a bit of acrobatics to pivot using my makeshift pole and issue a kick to the other soldier.  His neck is broken clean on the spot.  I stash our stolen identity papers in clenched fist making it look like he was able to grab them just before his death then leave to find the others.  Raj has just butchered about 30 women and children that were hiding in a dark passage – that outta get up the ire dwarves and start some trouble between them and the humans.

Now time to make our get-a-way.

Awe shit…..Why are the walls coming down….

Begin Act 2

Dungeon Master

The party was given a timetable of five weeks until the arrival of the trade delegation, with it taking four weeks riding to get there.  After considering the use of the Amulet of the Planes (not possible), a fruitless negotiation with Hieronymous Polecat, the party set off on horseback.  Taking a detour to the goblin-held wreck of a town that is Woodford took an extra three days.  The trip was uneventful until the last stretch between Hauteveldt and Neuholm.  Three days late meant the party had to hurry after the trade delegation.  Coming across the first set of wagons on the road the party subtly killed or captured the entire group.  It is morning, three days before the scheduled arrival of the trade delegation.
